폴 세잔, 생트 빅투아르 산 연작

폴 세잔(Paul Cézanne, 1839–1906)의 작품은 크게 두 시기로 구분해 볼 수 있습니다. 전반부는 대략적으로 1870년 대에서 1895년까지의 시기이며, 후반부는 1895년 경 부터 그가 세상을 떠난 1906년까지의 시기입니다. 폴 세잔은 양쪽 시기에 걸쳐서 생트 빅투아르 산의 모습을 화폭에 담았습니다.

1877년 10월 15일 엑스-마르세유(Aix-Marseille) 철도가 개통을 합니다. 그 후 6개월 정도 지난 1878년 4월 14일 폴 세잔은 열차를 타고아크 리버 밸리(Arc River Valley)에 있는 철교를 지나가면서 생트 빅투아르 산을 보고는 감동을 받습니다. 그리고, 그 내용을 친구 에밀 졸라(Émile Zola, 1840-1902)에게 서신으로 보냈죠. 아름다운 모티브(beau motif)라고 표현한 세잔은 그 무렵부터 생트 빅투아르 산을 배경으로 여러 점의 작품을 그립니다.
