속명인 Saxifraga는 라틴어로 바위 또는 돌(rock or stone)을 의미하는 saxum에 깨다(to break)라는 의미의  frangere를 합한 말로 바위를 깨는 자(stone-breaker)라는 의미를 지닙니다. 실제 바위를 깨는 식물이라기 보다, 신장결석(kidney stones, urinary calculi)에 효능이 있다고 믿어져 왔기때문에 붙여진 이름이라고 합니다.

아론의 수염은 구약성경 시편에서 유래합니다.
