요한묵시록에서 하느님의 군대를 이끌고 하늘에서 사탄의 군대와 싸우는 모습으로 등장하는 성 미카엘은 일반적으로 사탄을 물리치는 수호천사로 인식됩니다.

그때에 하늘에서 전쟁이 벌어졌습니다. 미카엘과 그의 천사들이 용과 싸운 것입니다. 용과 그의 부하들도 맞서 싸웠지만 당해 내지 못하여, 하늘에는 더 이상 그들을 위한 자리가 없었습니다. 그리하여 그 큰 용, 그 옛날의 뱀, 악마라고도 하고 사탄이라고도 하는 자, 온 세계를 속이던 그자가 떨어졌습니다. 그가 땅으로 떨어졌습니다. 그의 부하들도 그와 함께 떨어졌습니다. (요한 묵시록 12;7-9)

Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it. (Revelation 12;7-9)

유다 서간에서도 미카엘 대천사를 언급하면서 그가 모세의 주검을 놓고 악마와 다투며 논쟁했다고 서술하고 있습니다.

그러나 미카엘 대천사도 모세의 주검을 놓고 악마와 다투며 논쟁할 때, 감히 모독적인 판결을 내놓지 않고 “주님께서 너를 꾸짖으시기를 바란다.” 하고 말하였을 뿐입니다. (유다서간 1;9)

Yet the archangel Michael, when he argued with the devil in a dispute over the body of Moses, did not venture to pronounce a reviling judgment upon him but said, "May the Lord rebuke you!" (Jude 1;9)

미카엘에 대해서는 신약성경 뿐만 아니라 구약성경에도 나옵니다.

다니엘서에서는 '나라가 생긴 이래 일찍이 없었던 재앙의 때'에 미카엘 나서게 된다고 설명을 하고 있습니다.

그때에 네 백성의 보호자 미카엘 대제후 천사가 나서리라. 또한 나라가 생긴 이래 일찍이 없었던 재앙의 때가 오리라. 그때에 네 백성은, 책에 쓰인 이들은 모두 구원을 받으리라. (다니엘서 12;1)

At that time there shall arise Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people; It shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began until that time. At that time your people shall escape, everyone who is found written in the book. (Daniel 12;1)

미카엘 축일 경에 피는 Aster pannonicus(Tripolium pannonicum, Aster tripolium)나 Aster amellus는 이러한 미카엘 축일을 기념하는 꽃이라고 하여, Michaelmas daisy라고도 불립니다.
