일반적으로 몰약(沒藥)이라고 하면, 몰약나무 보다는 몰약나무속 식물의 진을 말린 천연고무수지를 말합니다.

몰약을 뜻하는 영어 단어 myrrh는 아람어(Aramaic)로 맛이 쓰다라는 뜻의 ܡܪܝܪܐ(murr)에서 유래한다고 합니다.

몰약은 불에 잘 타는 분향재(焚香材)로서 유향(乳香)과 더불어 기원전 2500~2400년의 이집트 제5, 제6 왕조시대에 이미 분향제로 사용하였습니다. 또한, 오래 전부터 방부제로도 사용되었고, 고대 이집트에서 미라를 만들 때에도 많이 쓰였다고 합니다.

□ 성경 속 몰약

몰약나무의 진은 방향성(芳香性)이 있어서 의복이나 침상에서 사용할 정도로 향이 좋았다고 합니다.

몰약과 침향과 계피로 당신 옷들이 모두 향기로우며 상아궁에서 흘러나오는 현악 소리가 당신을 즐겁게 합니다. [시편 45,9]

With myrrh, aloes, and cassia your robes are fragrant. From ivory-paneled palaces stringed instruments bring you joy. [Ps(Psalms) 45,9]

내 침상에 덮개를 깔았는데 화려한 이집트산 아마포랍니다. 잠자리에 몰약과 침향과 육계향도 뿌렸어요. [잠언 7,16-17]

I have spread coverlets over my divan, embroidered stuff, Egyptian material, I have sprinkled my bed with myrrh, with aloes and cinnamon. [Prv(Proverbs) 7,16-17]

또한, 여인들은 향주머니를 만들어 그것을 품에 간직하기도 했습니다.

그리고 여인의 몸을 정결하게 하는 품목이기도 했죠.

처녀들은 후궁 여인들의 규정에 따라 열두 달이 지나면 각자 크세르크세스 임금에게 차례대로 나아가게 되는데, 여섯 달 동안은 몰약 향유로, 나머지 여섯 달 동안은 발삼과 여성용 화장품으로 몸을 다듬었다. 이 기간이 끝나 처녀가 임금에게 들어갈 때면, 원하는 것은 무엇이든지 갖추어져 후궁에서 왕궁으로 보내졌다. [에스(에스테르기) 2,12-13]

이러한 몰약은 고가품으로 훌륭한 선물로 각광을 받았습니다.

단순히 고가품이었을 뿐만 아니라 품질이 우수한 몰약은 대제사장의 위임식을 위한 거룩한 관유 재료로 사용되기도 했습니다.

너는 가장 좋은 향료를 이렇게 장만하여라. 액체 몰약을 오백 세켈, 향기로운 육계향을 그 절반인 이백오십 세켈, 향기로운 향초를 이백오십 세켈, 계피를 성소 세켈로 오백 세켈, 그리고 올리브 기름 한 힌을 장만하여라. 너는 향을 만드는 법에 따라 이것들을 잘 섞어 거룩한 성별 기름을 만들어라. 바로 이것이 거룩한 성별 기름이 될 것이다. [탈출(탈출기) 30,23-25]

신약성경에서 동방박사들이 아기 예수를 위해 준비한 예물 중에 몰약이 들어 있었던 것은 이와 같이 훌륭한 선물이자, 의미가 있는 물건 중 하나였기 때문입니다.

그들은 그 별을 보고 더없이 기뻐하였다. 그리고 그 집에 들어가 어머니 마리아와 함께 있는 아기를 보고 땅에 엎드려 경배하였다. 또 보물 상자를 열고 아기에게 황금과 유향과 몰약을 예물로 드렸다. [마태(마태오 복음서) 2,11]

예수님의 탄생 선물이었던 몰약은 십자가에 매달리셨을 때에도 나타납니다.

또한, 돌아가시고 나서 유다인들의 관습에 따라서 예수님의 시신에 몰약과 알로에를 섞어 발랐다는 기록도 있습니다.

언젠가 밤에 예수님을 찾아왔던 니코데모도 몰약과 침향을 섞은 것을 백 리트라쯤 가지고 왔다. 그들은 예수님의 시신을 모셔다가 유다인들의 장례 관습에 따라, 향료와 함께 아마포로 감쌌다. [요한(요한 복음서) 19,39-40]

□ 그리스신화: 미르라(Myrrha, Mirrha, Μύρρα)

그리스 신화에 나오는 피그말리온(Pygmalion)의 외손자이자 키프로스(Cyprus)의 왕인 키니라스(Cinyras)에게는 미르라라는 딸이 있었습니다. 그녀의 미모는 아주 뛰어나서, 주변 국가의 수많은 군주들이 그녀와 결혼하기 위해 경쟁하였다고 합니다. 이에 미르라의 어머니 켄크레이스는 자신의 딸이 아프로디테보다도 더 예쁘다고 자랑하였습니다. 전승에 따라서는 미르라의 아버지 키니라스가 자랑했다고도 합니다. 이 말을 들은 아프로디테는 그들을 벌하기로 마음먹고 아들 에로스를 시켜 미르라의 마음에 아버지에 대한 연심을 불어넣었습니다. 또 다른 설에서는 어머니나 아버지의 잘못이 아닌, 미르라가 아프로디테에 대한 공경을 게을리하여 분노를 샀다고도 합니다.

아버지를 남자로서 사랑하게 된 미르라는 죄책감에 밧줄을 이용해 스스로 목숨을 끊으려 합니다. 하지만 그 순간 들어온 유모에게 발견되어 그녀의 시도는 실패로 돌아갔습니다. 미르라에게 자초지종을 들은 유모는 잘못된 충정을 발동하죠. 왕비를 포함하여 모든 혼인한 여자들이 9일 동안 금욕하며, 곡물의 여신 케레스(Ceres)를 모시러 간 사이 유모는 술책을 써서 캄캄한 어둠 속에서 그녀를 키니라스의 침실에 들게 하였습니다.

며칠 밤을 얼굴도 모른 채 어둠 속에서 동침한 여인이 궁금해진 키니라스는 한밤중에 불을 비쳐보고는 소스라치게 놀랐습니다. 키니라스는 당장 칼을 들어 딸을 죽이려 하였으나 미르라는 간신히 몸을 피해 아라비아 반도의 사바이아(Sabaea)로 도망쳤습니다.

임신하여 산달이 가까워진 몸으로 아라비아 반도를 헤매던 미르라는 눈물을 흘리며 신들에게 자신을 고통에서 벗어나게 해달라고 빌었고, 신들은 그녀를 몰약나무로 변신시켜 주었습니다. 미르라는 몰약나무로 변해서도 계속 눈물을 흘렸는데 몰약나무의 수액인 몰약은 그녀가 흘리는 눈물방울이라고 합니다. 한편, 이 사건으로 키니라스는 절망하여 스스로 목숨을 끊게 됩니다.

임신한 채로 나무로 변신한 미르라는 분만의 여신 에일레이티이아의 도움으로 아기를 낳을 수 있었는데, 나무에서 태어난 이 아이가 바로 아프로디테와 페르세포네의 사랑을 받은 미소년 아도니스(Adonis)입니다.
