메트로폴리탄미술관

메크로폴리탄미술관은 구어체에서는 흔히 줄여서 "the Met"이라고 합니다. 워낙 유명한 미술관이다 보니 설명하는게 오히려 어색한 미술관 중 하나이죠. 

미술관은 미국 국민들의 예술교육을 위해 1870년 설립되었으며, 미국 뿐만 아니라 서반구(Western Hemisphere)에서 가장 큰 미술관으로 소장하고 있는 작품이 2백만 점이 넘는다고 합니다. 워낙 많다 보니 다양한 시대, 다양한 지역의 작품들이 있습니다.

뉴욕을 그렇게 여러 번 갔었는데 메트로폴리탄미술관을 제대로 관람한 적은 없었던게 참 아쉽네요.

※ 서반구(西半球; Western Hemisphere)

위도 0도인 적도를 중심으로 북쪽과 남쪽을 이야기하는 북반구, 남반구라는 말은 종종 쓰지만, 한국어로 서반구라는 말은 사용해 본 적이 거의 없는 것 같습니다. 

영국 그리니치 천문대를 기준으로 경도 0도를 정하였으며, 이 지점이 본초자오선(prime meridian)이 됩니다. 그리고, 정반대쪽인 경도 180도인 지점을 반대자오선(antimeridian)이라고 합니다. 이 지점이 날짜 변경선이기도 하죠. 다만, 경도 180도인 곳에 사람이 사는 곳이 포함되면 같은 날짜로 묶게되고, 또한 해당 지역의 영유권을 지닌 국가의 결정을 따르다 보니 날짜 변경선은 반대자오선과 일치하지 않고 들쑥날쑥한 모습을 보입니다.

그리고, 자오선의 서쪽이자 반대자오선의 동쪽인 부분을 서반구라고 합니다. 남북아메리카, 태평양, 대서양 등이 포함됩니다. 

서구(西歐; the West, the Occident)라는 말은 서반구와는 다른 개념입니다. 유럽과 북아메리카를 통틀어 말하는 말이죠.
