오프쇼어링(Offshoring)은 기업이 비용 절감을 주된 목적으로 제조, 서비스, 물류 등의 핵심 업무 프로세스 일부를 인건비나 세금이 저렴한 해외 국가로 이전하는 경영 및 물류 전략을 의미합니다. 1990년대부터 글로벌화와 함께 급격히 확산되었으며, 기업들은 이를 통해 생산 단가를 대폭 낮추고 가격 경쟁력을 확보할 수 있었습니다. 국제 해운과 항공 물류 네트워크 역시 이러한 오프쇼어링된 화물을 실어 나르기 위해 폭발적으로 성장했습니다.

하지만 최근 팬데믹으로 인한 글로벌 물류 대란, 지정학적 갈등, 그리고 너무 길어진 공급망의 취약성이 명백히 드러나면서, 단순히 '최저 비용'만을 고려한 전통적인 오프쇼어링 전략은 큰 도전에 직면해 있습니다. 현재 많은 기업들이 공급망의 안정성을 위해 인접 국가로 기지를 옮기는 '니어쇼어링(Nearshoring)'이나 우방국으로 이전하는 '프렌드쇼어링(Friendshoring)'으로 전략을 수정하고 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 오프쇼어링은 오늘날의 거대한 글로벌 물류 네트워크를 형성한 가장 뼈대가 되는 기본 개념입니다.

Offshoring

Offshoring is a business and supply chain strategy where a company relocates parts of its business processes—such as manufacturing, services, or logistics—to a foreign country. The primary goal is usually to take advantage of lower labor costs, tax benefits, or more favorable regulatory conditions. Peaking in popularity during the globalization boom of the 1990s, offshoring allowed multinational companies to drastically reduce production costs and achieve competitive pricing, concurrently driving massive growth in the international shipping and freight industries.

However, in recent years, traditional offshoring has been heavily re-evaluated. Following severe pandemic-induced logistics bottlenecks, geopolitical conflicts, and the exposed vulnerabilities of stretching supply chains across the globe, companies are realizing the hidden risks of chasing the lowest possible costs. Many are now pivoting toward "nearshoring" or "friendshoring" to prioritize supply chain resilience and national security. Nevertheless, offshoring remains the foundational concept upon which the modern global logistics network was built.
