온쇼어링(Onshoring)은 기업이 해외로 이전했던 제조, 생산, 또는 서비스 시설을 다시 자국(본국)으로 되돌려오는 경영 및 물류 전략을 뜻하며, '리쇼어링(Reshoring)'이라고도 불립니다. 수십 년간 기업들은 인건비 절감을 위해 오프쇼어링(Offshoring)을 적극적으로 추진했으나, 최근 몇 년간 글로벌 공급망은 코로나19 팬데믹, 홍해 물류 사태, 미·중 패권 경쟁 등 심각한 지정학적·환경적 위기에 직면했습니다. 이로 인해 해외 의존도가 높은 길고 복잡한 공급망의 치명적인 취약성이 드러났습니다. 결과적으로 국가와 기업들은 비용이 조금 더 들더라도 '공급망의 안정성'과 '핵심 기술의 국가 안보'를 최우선 가치로 삼게 되었습니다. 자국 내에 생산 및 물류 기지를 재구축함으로써 운송 지연을 원천적으로 방지하고, 글로벌 불확실성에 대응하려는 강력한 움직임이 바로 온쇼어링입니다. (미국의 CHIPS법이나 인플레이션 감축법(IRA)이 이를 촉진하는 대표적인 정책입니다.)

Onshoring (frequently referred to as reshoring) is the business and supply chain strategy of bringing manufacturing, production, or service operations back to a company's home country from overseas. For decades, multinational companies aggressively pursued "offshoring" to capitalize on lower labor costs. However, recent global crises—including the COVID-19 pandemic, severe shipping bottlenecks, and rising geopolitical friction (such as US-China trade tensions)—have brutally exposed the fragility of deeply extended international supply chains. Consequently, companies and governments are now prioritizing supply chain resilience, quality control, and national security over mere cost savings. By onshoring their operations, businesses aim to permanently bypass international transit delays, reduce reliance on volatile foreign relations, and build a robust domestic logistics network that can withstand global macroeconomic shocks.
